Sailing the Nile for MDGs: starting the
project with an exhibition. Alexandria, Egypt, April 7 2006
Gudran Association for Art and Development
is a group of artists based in Alexandria – Egypt (plastic artists,
a filmmaker, a graphics designer, a musician and a fisherman from
the Max), interested in using art as a method for development. Gudran
is currently involved in a major project that will be developed in
Egypt through 2006, called “Sailing the Nile for MDGs”.
Eight sailing boats will be sailing down the Nile River, stopping
in various cities (between the 28th of October to the 9th of December
2006). Each sailboat will represent one of the eight MDGs (the eight
Millennium Development Goals– which range from halving extreme
poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal
primary education, all by the target date of 2015) and have the corresponding
MDG symbol on the sail. It will display successful MDG projects involving
volunteering and aims to guide and inspire local communities of the
Nile Basin to start own projects to realizing the MDGs. In addition,
various cultural sport and art activities will take place in each
chosen stop point or city. In each city concrete visible results and
tools will be left behind benefiting the local population.
Gudran Association has organized the exhibition “Artistic Work
for the MDGs”, where young artists' works are presented in the
course of the preparatory stage of the program of “Sailing the
Nile for MDGs”: opening on Friday April 7th in ACAF/ Alexandria
            Contemporary Arts Forum, Azarita, Alexandria.
