PRESS FREEDOM: THE WORLDWIDE INDEX (at the meantime, in Tunis...)
Reporters Without Borders announces its third annual worldwide index of press freedom. The ranking is calculated on the basis of persecution or censoring of journalists: the most frequently they happen, worst is the ranking. Among the 167 countries enclosed in the index (with Denmark at the first place, North Korea at the bottom of the entire list), Countries of the Mediterranean Basin had Slovenia at n. 15, France at 19, Bosnia at 21, Portugal at 25, Greece at 33, Israel at 36, Italy and Spain at 39, Albania at 50, Croatia at 55, Cyprus at 81, Morocco at 126, Palestinian Authority at 127, Algeria and Egypt at 128, Tunisia at 152, Libya at 154, Syria at 155.
In the meantime, in Tunis, President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali has been re-elected for the fourth time with a percentage of 94,49%. ALL the newspaper (remember the press freedom ranking: 152) are enthusiastic about the election process. The daily “La Presse de Tunisine” defines the elections “a historical event (…) this election is the evidence of a new way of the political life in Tunis. The environment of absolute calm and healthy competition in which the elections took place demonstrate the confidence of the people in Tunisia. These elections prove that a model of prêt-a-porter democracy does not exist, and that our President made the right decision in choosing to proceed step by step”.
