Mawazine Music Festival: Rabat, 16-24 May,
2008
The Mawazine Festival will open its 7th edition in Rabat on
the 16th of May. The word Mawazine evokes, taken in the plural, the
diversity of songs, dances and rhythms. This diversity is manifested
through the participation of forty countries, and the organisation
of over a hundred concerts. This 7th edition of the event will have
a jazzy or Tzigane flavour.
Jazz refers to the emergence of an Afro-American musical identity
and a liberating movement. In its valorisation of orality, its rhythmical
conception, as well as its call into question of moderate tones, jazz
shows forth as an alternative beat adrift from a music that sits at
the polar opposite of the spontaneity characteristic of African rhythms.
Tzigane music is very much represented throughout an itinerary that
stretches from India, the native land of the Tzigane, through Turkey,
with Hassan Yrimdunia, the Taraf of Haidouks in Romania, all the way
to Goran Bregovic, who celebrates a mixture of styles, and sends out
a firework of music and voices that have no borders. The Arab world
and Moroccan song are equally honoured in this edition of Mawazine.
An international colloquium - entitled “World Music and Cultural
Diversity”- will add up to the musical spectacle a discourse
that claims diversity as a factor of richness for human beings, a
source of openness that breaks away from the narrowness of the unique
model as well as from hegemonic culture.
