The Heart of the Matter - The role of the arts and culture for the Balkans. A conference on the 1st of December in The Hague - Holland
Organised by the European Cultural Foundation (ECF) and HIVOS (Dutch Humanist Institute for Cooperation with Developing Countries), the event will take place on 1 December 2005 in the Vredespaleis (Peace Palace) in The Hague. Starting from the recent political analysis by the International Commission on the Balkans, participants will address the role of the arts and culture for the Balkans now and in the perspective of European integration. The results of the ECF's Reflection Group on the Balkans will be presented to European policymakers, foundation representatives, and artists. The Reflection Group, moderated by Dutch journalist Chris Keulemans, explores the roles that the arts and culture have played in the fall of the Yugoslavian and Albanian regimes and their potential as factors in reconciliation, development, and European integration. The Balkan event will discuss political and practical measures based on recent findings and launch a new funding-line to support cultural cooperation in the region.
